You are the best specialist on the team. Your numbers are right, your projects are running, and still someone else gets promoted. Many leaders experience this. They did everything right professionally and overlooked that beyond a certain level, additional rules apply.
Performance is the entry ticket
Organisations are complex structures of power. Anyone who wants to move up has to understand the unwritten rules by which promotions are decided. This has nothing to do with manipulation. It means taking responsibility for your own development instead of passively waiting for recognition.
Three building blocks
1. Recognise power relations. Who really makes the decisions? It is not always the person with the highest title. Which unwritten rules apply? How are personnel decisions actually made?
2. Build visibility. Invisibility is one of the most common career brakes. Many believe good work gets noticed on its own. That is rarely true. Make your results known, factually and in measured doses, to the people who have a say, and build a network that supports you.
3. Use communication deliberately. How you speak helps decide whether you are seen as a leader or purely as a specialist. Clear messages, understandable explanations, the willingness to address uncomfortable issues.
The ethical framework
Influence does not come from fear but from respect and trust. The most sustainable careers stand on an honest foundation. Use your influence for yourself, for your team and for the company.
Your next step
These skills can be developed. Many try it alone and miss the fine distinctions. An outside view helps.
